Is this a real, measurable, factual term? No, probably not, but it is something I have been marinating on lately, so I made up a term for it! To clarify, at what point do you really shine? I’m talking full of life, glowing, bright, happy light which people are attracted to be around. It is not something you can portray through words alone, but rather the energy you give off to those around you.
Why is this important? Because I think the healthier you are, the more you radiate! And vice versa. The more you radiate, the healthier you are. As you radiate, you start to attract others who also radiate into your life. In theory, this is the Law of Attraction at its best. Are good things happening to me? Are the people I am surrounded by happy and positive? Am I confident, stress-free, and making a positive difference in my life and in other’s? If not, energy becomes low, negativity swoops in, and a multitude of health problems are triggered.
As a fitness and wellness coach, it is interesting to see who radiates around me and at what point I radiate myself. For the most part, I have chosen a path of daily activity, healthy eating, and a focus on my health, but to be honest, I am not always radiating. So what is my personal radiating point? For a start, I am guilty of overtraining. I love the endorphins and the rush that follows a killer workout. I sometimes obsess over getting a workout in or choosing the best possible fuel for my body. Instead of feeling like a rockstar, I am left tired, sore and sometimes unhappy. I am neither shining nor radiating at this point.
So at what point do I personally radiate? I have found when my world is balanced, so are my emotions. I am able to shine outwardly because I’m not sucking up every last bit of energy I have to move forward. I am at peace with my body and have a clear mind to take in whatever the day has for me. Balance is a tricky term and it is definitely different for everyone, but here is my recipe for living a balanced, healthy, radiating life! *(At least what is working for me now!)
How to Radiate:
REST: Rest is a huge component of my personal health. It keeps me even and full of energy throughout the day. My cortisol stays low, I have fewer cravings for carbohydrates/sweets, and my hormones are steady—no crazy Katy! Eight hours is essential to my wellbeing, but I sometimes get closer to ten if my body is in “heal mode.”
MOVE: The opposite of rest ☺, also known as my personal happy place. The amount of activity your body thrives off of is different for everyone, and I am constantly trying to find the perfect amount for me. Right now it seems less is more. I have found this year that it is impossible for me to run my business, be a loving wife, AND somehow be in the best shape of my life, and you know what, I am finally becoming okay with that! No, really!! I would rather learn to cook, put on a few extra pounds, grow my business and miss my planned workout time because I’m cranking out new content, than try to organize my time in perfect little boxes. Just because I miss my workout time doesn’t mean I can’t grab a walk after dinner and stay on track. Guess what? Your body doesn’t care what the activity is, what time you do it or who you do it with if you’re just trying to be healthy. There’s a difference between healthy and being in the best shape of my life. For me, it’s about being healthy and happy so I can help others become healthy and happy too. My current goal is an hour of activity every day with one complete rest day. (I have been known to workout even four hours a day, so sometimes the challenge is more in saying no!) I like to keep it varied so I hit everything at least once a week from weight training, running, spin, walking and yoga. This is my happy balance, you must find your own.
MEDITATE: My saving grace. There is nothing fluffy here and I am nowhere near an expert, but it has truly saved my health. I am one anxious entrepreneur who must constantly be doing or thinking about something! By taking 30 minutes out of my day to close my eyes and literally just breathe, I am able to attack the rest of my day and still feel calm and in control. *Tip: turn on “Heart Meditations” radio on Pandora, close your eyes, and say in your head, “This is me breathing in.” (Inhale) This is me breathing out. (Exhale).” Allow thoughts to come in, accept them, and then go back to thinking about your breath.
NUTRITION: There’s no way around it…the better I eat, the better I feel. This is a no brainer! Whether it’s preparing my meals in advance, stocking up on healthy alternatives, or saying no to binging and sweets I make sure to have a plan for the week. I have done every sort of diet, and I am really good at competitions when it comes to eating or setting a deadline, but it hasn’t always kept me on track after it’s over. If it’s one thing I have learned this year, when it comes to food, DON’T STRESS. Eat healthy when you can, make good decisions when you can’t, have sweets on occasion when you really want them, and then move on. Life is too short to constantly stress over what we put in our mouth, and if you are, it is causing more weight gain from your hormones than just enjoying what you eat.
SUPPLEMENTS: The more you workout, the more you are striping your body of nutrients that need to be replaced. This is why you may see super fit people with terrible stomach issues (yes, I’m talking about myself) or even a myriad of injuries. Replenishment is key and unfortunately, we can’t always get it from food. Even if you’re not working out, here is my quick list of 4 Essential Supplements everyone should take:
1. L-Glutamine is essential to anyone who works out frequently or has digestive issues. When we work out, our muscles use L-glutamine for cellular repair and you lose the functionality of the L-glutamine to help you digest food. I take L-glutamine three times a day to help with inflammation, digestion, and muscle repair. It is also known to cut sugar/carb cravings if taken before a meal!
2. Mutli-Vitamin providing you with essential vitamins and minerals to help you with daily energy and body functions…this is a no brainer. Taking a daily multi-vitamin can help fight off toxins that are released when we workout and can also keep us from getting sick.
5. Fish Oil helps with inflammation and muscle recovery. Honestly, it is a gift from the gods! It lubricates joints and makes your body run like a well-oiled machine…literally!
4. Protein helps you build lean muscle mass and helps with fat loss. Although it is better to receive protein from food, protein shakes are a great way to get fast absorbing protein into your body to meet your daily requirements in a low calorie way. It is great for post-workout recovery or in between meals.
PURPOSE: Find purpose in yourself and in your life. You may not know the exact path you want to travel, but move forward with a purpose. It’s okay not to know exactly what you want. To be honest, what I want is constantly evolving, but I keep moving forward. Don’t overcomplicate your purpose. I know I was meant to help people. That is my purpose. So whether it’s real estate, fitness, health, or my next venture, I am propelled forward with that purpose in mind. Life is about following the journey, taking on new adventures, and knowing at any given time you are exactly where you’re supposed to be, so you might as well enjoy it while you’re there.
LOVE: Love yourself and love others. How the heck can you love anyone if you don’t love yourself? Affirmations, checking in with yourself, journaling, and everything you tackle during the day should be an expression of how much you love yourself. Go ahead; fall deeply, madly in love! The more you love yourself, the more you radiate that self-love to others. It is infectious, and honestly, I think it’s the meaning of life!
