So excited to join the MOVE team of coaches! Moving is what I love to do most! I have been an athlete interested in a variety of activities since I can remember. I grew up jumping on the trampoline, yes even in winters in Wisconsin (I made my parents keep it in the garage), playing kickball until all hours of the night with the neighbor kids, and playing in some competitive games of basketball and football at recess with the boys. Here’s one example of how I already had this training mindset from early on: In fifth grade I was bound and determined to get the presidential fitness achievement award in PE, so I worked on my pullups at recess time. What kid does that? I achieved that goal and continue to work on my pullups at MOVE ☺.
I played volleyball, basketball, soccer and ran cross-country at a small town high school in Winneconne, WI. I was extremely upset when being cut from the varsity volleyball team (hey, you can only have so many back row specialists) and knew I couldn’t spend the fall season not competing in something, so I decided to join the cross-country team. Prior to this, I had never ran further than a mile and had the mentality of, “Why just run to run? I need to be racing to a ball or something!” That fall I learned to push myself harder than ever before, fell in love with running, and finished in the top of the conference. Determination!
From there, I went on to play soccer at Wisconsin Lutheran College, a small private school in Milwaukee, WI. My major was psychology and minor was coaching, (yes, that was a real minor)! There’s nothing like playing a sport at a college level with two-a-day trainings and traveling for games. During those years I was fortunate to be able to work soccer camps with the semi-professional team The Milwaukee Wave as well as coach high school basketball and soccer. Such fun times!
After finishing graduate school for speech pathology at UW-Milwaukee, I decided I wanted to try a warmer climate so I could be outside moving more throughout the year. My first year here in Austin, I joined a kick-boxing gym. It was a lot of fun learning to train like a fighter and working on mental toughness. To change it up, I decided to train and run my first marathon and after many months of running by myself I knew I needed to find a gym community again to get back to working out regularly and socializing with adults (I work in pediatrics with children). I found out about MOVE through a friend and decided to give it a try. The workouts were challenging with a good variety of movements, the community was fun, and Katy and Jarrod were rockin’ it as coaches!
Through MOVE, I was connected with Coach Erin and Jill as well as Julie Pickler and enjoyed training together for more marathons as well the Austin Fittest competition. MOVE also provided a way for me to learn more about nutrition as I completed a 4 month nutrition challenge. That education and goal gave me the tools to continue to eat healthier and smarter with living a busy and active lifestyle. I am thankful to have become a nerd about nutrition and enjoy learning more. Thanks MOVE!
So why coach? Why at MOVE? As you can see, I have a passion for fitness that runs through my life story. I want to put this passion into action and I can’t imagine a better place to start! After being a part of this community for 3.5 years, it’s like family. So here I go, starting at MOVE to learn and develop my coaching skills from the best :-)! Thank you everyone for your support already, it means so much!
