Hello MOVE community, family, and friends! It’s been awhile since we have hit you with some knowledge. At the beginning of the year, I made a goal to do 1 speaking engagement (speaking scares the crap out of me!). I wasn’t sure how I would obtain this goal or even why anyone would want to hear my story (can you hear the negative self talk and fear creeping in??). Well a fellow friend, colleague and gym owner, Stephanie Twohey, of Grit Strength and Conditioning was putting on a summer kids camp and asked me to speak to her kiddos. What an honor!! Then the anxiety kicked in, and holy crap, what the hell am I going to talk about?? What can I say that would hopefully make little ears perk up? Well after a lot of prayer, meditation, and thought I decided to keep it simple and create an acronym from Steph’s gym, GRIT. Below is my very summarized story of how I have arrived to where I am today. I hope you enjoy and that it may help you and anyone else that is willing to read, but first, I need to thank Stephanie and all her kiddos for giving me the opportunity to reflect and present my truth. Thank you, Steph! It was an amazing and fun experience!
Imagine living in a home where youhad to walk on the beams so you wouldn’t fall through the ground. Where you laid by the window at night, praying for a breeze because you didn’t have a/c (in Texas haha). Where cock roaches made more of a home than you did, in the space you grew up. That was my home. I grew up poor, received free breakfasts and lunches at school and without much of a father figure. I wasn’t the best student academically, but I did well enough and I developed relationships with coaches who saw I had an excellent work ethic. Fast forward: I was the first one to graduate college in my family (on both sides) and now I do what I love and also accomplished a life long dream. Not to work a desk job! You can create a new reality with the following principles and A LOT of hard work.
